Description

Connect your Arduino-compatible device to the Internet with this WiFi shield featuring the FCC-certified ATWINC1500 module from Atmel. This 802.11bgn-capable WiFi module offers SSL support and rock solid performance, ideal for long-term networking projects.

The shield uses SPI to communicate and includes GPIO for control, requiring only about 6 wires. It is compatible with SAMD21-based boards such as Arduino Zero, Metro M0 Express, M4s, and Arduino Mega, but not compatible with 328P, 32u4, or attiny-based boards. It supports a clock speed of up to 12MHz for fast and reliable data streaming, and network scanning and connection times of a few seconds.

This WiFi shield supports 802.11b, g, and n networks with WEP, WPA, and WPA2 encryption. It can operate in Soft AP mode to create an ad-hoc network, and supports TLS 1.2 secure client connections. It features a uFL connector for attaching external antennas. A version with a PCB trace antenna is available separately.

The shield includes level shifters for 3V and 5V logic compatibility and a 3.3V voltage regulator capable of handling 300mA spikes, allowing power from 3-5.5V DC. There are three controllable LEDs indicating network status. Also included is a micro SD card socket for hosting or storing internet data; however, Arduino ATmega328-based boards cannot use both WiFi and SD libraries simultaneously due to memory limitations.

Please note: No CircuitPython or MicroPython drivers are available or planned for the WINC1500.
